Aberdeen Central

Aberdeen is Scotland's third city, the hub of the North East or Grampian region and the administrative centre of Britain's North Sea oil and gas industry. It is famous for its granite architecture, the superb natural environment and resources of the surrounding region, excellence in health care and higher education, and long traditions of enterprise and global connections.

The Scottish Parliament constituency of Aberdeen Central contains the former burghs of Woodside and Old Aberdeen, as well as the heart of the modern city.

Aberdeen Central has a population of approaching 70,000 and an electorate of nearly 50,000. It has been held by Lewis Macdonald since 1999. In 2007 multi-member wards came into operation across the country, along with a new voting system. Single Transferable Voting (STV) was introduced for local government elections to ensure that candidates elected reflected as closely as possible to the support given by the electorate. Whilst the number of councillors for the city remais unchanged at 43, the number of wards has been reduced to 13 and, instead of electing a single councillor, some wards will return 3 members and others 4.

Aberdeen's Central constituency is the vibrant heart of a dynamic city at the centre of one of Scotland's most go-ahead regions. Representing a city centre constituency, Lewis Macdonald deals with a whole range of social and economic issues around development, infrastructure and urban living, some of which can be found on the Hot Topics page. If you live in Aberdeen Central and have an issue you wish to raise with your MSP, please go to the Constituents' Zone.
