| Breathing a sigh of relief: |
Lewis Macdonald was appointed Deputy Health Minister in June 2005, just as the Bill to ban smoking in public places completed its passage through the Scottish Parliament. On the day of the ban coming into force in March 2006, Lewis was joined by colleagues Frank Doran, Anne Begg and Richard Baker to have a smoke-free drink in a city-centre bar, to mark the occasion.
The ban will mean that everyone in Scotland will have a right to work and socialise in a smoke-free environment. More than 13,000 people die every year in Scotland from tobacco use and it is estimated that around 1,000 people who have never smoked die every year from the effects of passive second-hand smoking. It is estimated that the smoking ban will prevent hundreds of deaths a year from lung cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke and respiratory diseases.
Smoking in public places will be banned in the rest of the UK in 2007.
