Macdonald welcomes 'first step' on junior doctor training
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald today welcomed the decision of the Scottish Executive to extend the contracts of junior doctors who find themselves without a training post by 1 August until the end of October or until they receive a post, whichever is the sooner.
Speaking following today's meeting of the Scottish Parliament's Health and Sport Committee, Lewis Macdonald said:
'On Friday evening I met around 60 junior doctors in Aberdeen, who were concerned that they might end up without training posts under the new training system, Modernising Medical Careers (MMC)
'I am pleased to be able to report that Scottish Ministers have today taken a first step towards resolving these issues, by agreeing to extend the contracts to the end of October of those not offered a post by 1 August.
'I asked Nicola Sturgeon also to put in place a mechanism to allow trainees with training post offers in different parts of the country to swap those offers. She agreed to consider it in future, but did not commit to doing so for this year's trainees, so i will press the Executive further on this to make sure it happens if at all possible.'
