| Pennington a Local Hero |
MSPs of all parties and their guests will celebrate the Third Session of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood tomorrow (Saturday 30 June).
The occasion will be marked by a procession of Local Heroes from all over Scotland, in the style of the traditional Riding which used to mark the opening of the old Scottish Parliament before the Act of Union 300 years ago this year.
MSP for Aberdeen Central Lewis Macdonald has nominated Professor Hugh Pennington as his Local Hero.
Hugh Pennington has had a long and distinguished career in which he has made a major contribution to scientific knowledge and public health in Scotland and across the UK. As emeritus professor of bacteriology at the University of Aberdeen, he continues to expand expertise in this are, while also promoting public understanding of science in general. His contributions to research on the organisms that cause meningitis, e-coli 0157 and other bugs: his leadership of the enquiry into the 1996 outbreak of e-coli in Central Scotland; his role in the establishment of the Food Standards Agency, including FSA Scotland in Aberdeen; and his service on other public bodies such as the Broadcasting Council for Scotland.
