| Don`t cut cancer care, says Macdonald |
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald today called on Health Ministers not to cut cancer care services for children at Royal Aberdeen Children`s Hospital.
He has written to Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon in support of NHS Grampian`s case for keeping kids` cancer services in Aberdeen, and calling on her to make an early decision to make Foresterhill one of Scotland`s two specialist centres for children`s cancer care.
Lewis Macdonald said:
'Royal Aberdeen Children`s Hospital is the best health facility for children anywhere in Scotland. It is ideally placed for development as a major centre for children`s cancer care, serving the whole of the North of Scotland.
'Ministers have a duty to take clinical advice on what will produce the best outcomes for patients. They also have to ensure that all parts of the country are treated fairly.
'That is why I believe it is right to modernise the delivery of children`s cancer care services, to develop a managed clinical network for the whole of Scotland and to have two major specialist services at the heart of that network. One of these should be in Aberdeen, serving the North of Scotland.
Lewis Macdonald, a former Deputy Health Minister, also urged Ministers to come to an early decision.
'I know these can be tough decisions for Ministers,' he said. 'But the sooner Nicola Sturgeon decides on this one, the sooner doctors can get on with planning how to further improve services.'
