Macdonald calls for urgent action on pool
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald used today`s meeting of the Scottish Parliament`s Health and Sport Committee to press Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell to support Aberdeen`s bid for an Olympic-standard 50m swimming pool.

During the Committee meeting the Minister described Aberdeen`s current proposal as 'very ambitious', and said that Aberdeen City Council had not offered realistic options which Scottish Ministers could support.

Macdonald was quick to point out that Scottish Executive Minister John Swinney was reported to have told journalists in Aberdeen in August that the decision between full facilities and a training pool was down to Stewart Maxwell as Minster for Sport.

Lewis Macdonald asked if the Minister had received a response from local partners to his call for a wider range of options, made when he visited Aberdeen earlier this year. Stewart Maxwell said he was not aware of any such response.

Macdonald said:

`I today urged Stewart Maxwell to go back to the Council, to make clear what kind of project Ministers will support, and to work to ensure that Aberdeen secures a 50m pool in time to get the benefits of the 2012 London Olympics and hopefully the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He said he would be happy to discuss that, and I will now write to ask him to firm up that commitment.`
