Macdonald welcomes Council climbdown at Frederick Street
Local MSP Lewis Macdonald today welcomed indications that Aberdeen City Council will no longer seek to evict 27 small businesses from the Frederick Street Business Centre before the end of the year.

Lewis Macdonald, MSP for Aberdeen Central, said today:

`Businesses in Frederick Street were originally ordered to quit their premises by the end of this week. I understand that has now been extended to the end of the year, and that the effected businesses were told as much by council officers on Friday 5th of October.

`I welcome this climbdown, but the Council should never have put local businesses in this position in the first place. A local authority should support people who are creating wealth for the local economy, instead of acting in a high-handed manner that could put people out of business.

`An extension to the end of December is to the credit of local councillor Jim Hunter, who has worked hard to represent the businesses affected. We know a number of businesses may still find it impossible to relocate by the end of the year, and in those circumstances Jim Hunter will insist that they are given whatever leeway they need.

`If Depute Council Leader Kevin Stewart ends up trying to put people out on the streets at Christmas, he will be fought him all the way.`
