| Justice Minister's answers a cop-out, says Macdonald |
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald today described the answers to questions he raised in the Scottish Parliament about the planned closure of Aberdeen Prison as a cop-out by the SNP.
`Scottish Executive Ministers have decided to close Aberdeen Prison, and I wanted to know what they made of the very reasonable concerns raised by the prison's own Visiting Committee,` he said today.
`I did not ask the Ministers to keep open Craiginches. I simply asked how they would respond to concerns about leaving Scotland's third city with no local prison.
`Kenny MacAskill's answers were disappointing in the extreme. He didn't offer to meet the Aberdeen Prison Visiting Committee. He didn't acknowledge their concerns about prisoners finding it harder to change their ways when cut off from their families. He didn't even offer to think about a remand centre for prisoners awaiting trial in Aberdeen.
`His whole approach was that he didn't really care about any of that. It was a classic cop-out. Ministers regularly ignore the arguments, fail to answer the questions, and put the interests of their party first. This decision might lead to more people reoffending, and to public money wasted on shuttling prisoners between Peterhead and Aberdeen, but Ministers just don't want to know.`
