| Denial on school closures, says Macdonald |
Aberdeen MSP Lewis Macdonald today accused Ministers of being in denial over the threat of closure hanging over city schools.
He spoke out after Schools Minister Maureen Watt failed to answer questions in the Scottish Parliament on school closures, and claimed that just because Aberdeen City Council was reviewing the schools estate did not mean any schools were at risk of closure.
`This is the second time Education Ministers have denied the obvious,` said Lewis Macdonald today. `Last month it was a Minister from the Central Belt. This time it was a Minister from the North East. Maureen Watt has even less excuse for refusing to answer my questions.
`I asked her whether the city would need more schools, not less, if it was to deliver SNP commitments for smaller class sizes, and to confirm that under-use at present would not be an excuse for school closure, given the need for more space if that commitment was to be met.
`Maureen Watt would not answer. She claimed that the review of the schools estate was not about closing schools. What else does she want parents and pupils to believe the review is about? She may be in denial about the threat to schools in Aberdeen, but she will not be able to hide from these questions once the review is completed next month.
`Councillor Kirsty West,Convener of Education in Aberdeen, said today that Ministers not councils should be paying the millions of pounds smaller class sizes will cost.
`Given that Ministers will not face up to the consequences of their policies, it is children and families who will pay the price in school closures and loss of parental choice.`
