| Macdonald calls on Salmond to help not hinder golf tourism |
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald has called on First Minister Alex Salmond to support the Trump golf resort development with Scottish Government funding for new direct air routes to Aberdeen.
Lewis Macdonald, who was Deputy Transport Minister when the Air Route Development Fund was introduced in 2002, condemned the SNP's decision to scrap the fund and called on Ministers to put in place a new Route Marketing Fund to take its place.
He has tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament following last night's decision, by the Formartine Area Committee of Aberdeenshire Council, to support Donald Trump's application to develop a world class golf resort north of Aberdeen.
Lewis Macdonald said: `Given the right public and private sector support, the Trump development offers Aberdeen city and shire a great opportunity to become a world class destination for golf tourism.
`The problem is that Alex Salmond and Stewart Stevenson have done away with the highly successful Air Route Development Fund just when the North East needs it most.
`This is the time when Scottish Ministers should be announcing new ways of attracting golfers and tourists from around the world. Instead, they are taking away a fund that has been supporting new direct routes successfully for the last five years.
`I am calling on Alex Salmond to set up a new fund to allow Aberdeen Airport to attract new direct routes, which is absolutely essential if we are to attract golfers from other parts of the world as well as other parts of the UK.`
Motion tabled in the Scottish Parliament 21 November 2007:
Golf tourism in Aberdeen City and Shire S3M-00895 Lewis Macdonald (Aberdeen Central) (Lab):
That the Parliament notes the decision on 20 November 2007 by the Formartine Area Committee of Aberdeenshire Council to support Donald Trump's application to develop a world-class golf resort in the north east; recognises the opportunity, given the right public and private sector support, to promote Aberdeen city and shire as a world-class golfing and tourist destination; regrets the Scottish Government's decision not to replace the highly successful Route Development Fund to support the development of new routes to Aberdeen and other Scottish airports, and calls on Scottish ministers to put in place a route marketing scheme to support such essential routes in future.
