| This must never happen again: Macdonald |
Aberdeenshire Council must never again reject a project of regional and national importance without even its own councillors having a say, Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald told the Scottish Parliament today.
He asked Alex Salmond if he agreed that the Council should urgently review its own rules, after 7 of its 68 elected members were able to throw out the Trump golf proposals without the vast majority of their fellow-councillors getting to vote.
`The First Minister agreed that many, many councillors in Aberdeenshire were denied the opportunity to vote on the Trump proposals,` Lewis Macdonald said after First Minister's Question Time. `That is sufficient reason for Ministers to have called in the application, since the Council was powerless to overturn a decision made in its name.
`Aberdeenshire now has to review its own rules,` he said. `Not just for the sake of local democracy in the shire, but also because of the impact of their decision last week on the rest of the North East and indeed the whole of Scotland.
`Councillors could have voted to continue to talk to Donald Trump. Instead they decided just to throw his project out, even after a tied 7-7 vote, because the convenor chose to use his casting vote against any further negotiation.
`Lessons must be learned by all local councils. A decision to reject a major project must never again be taken by a council when most of its members are denied a vote.`
