| Macdonald challenges City Council on closure of Lemon Tree |
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald today blamed Depute City Council leader Kevin Stewart for the decision to close Aberdeen's leading mid-sized live music venue.
Speaking on the decision by Aberdeen City Council's Resources Management Committee to pull the plug on The Lemon Tree, Macdonald said:
`At a time when Aberdeen is about to get a Centre for Contemporary Arts, when everyone agrees we need to address our cultural deficit if we are to be a truly competitive city, Administration councillors have chosen to close one of the city's best-known venues.
`Kevin Stewart, the convener of the Resources Management Committee, should be ashamed of this decision. After he personally insisted on closure of the Frederick Street Business Centre just round the corner, it is hard to avoid the suspicion that this is yet another asset being lost to the city to allow the Council to build their own little empire around Marischal College.
`If that is not the case, then they should sit down immediately with the staff and users of The Lemon Tree and work out how to maintain the venue and protect the jobs.`
