Tell Councillors what the people think, says Macdonald
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald today called on Aberdeen City Council to ensure the views of parents are fully reported to councillors deciding on proposals to close city schools.

Speaking after last night's meeting at St Machar Academy on Council proposals for closure of Causewayend School, Lewis Macdonald said today:

`Parents listened to a presentation by council officers on the Administration's reasons for wanting to close Causewayend School, and then heard the answers to their questions about council plans.

`The Parents' Council then asked for a show of hands for and against closure. The vote was 66 to 1 against closure. Quite simply, the case for closure of Causewayend School was overwhelmingly rejected by the school community.

`The purpose of consultation is to give people the facts, and then ask their views. Council officers said they could not think of any circumstances where they would fail to include that vote in their report on that consultation meeting, but I have written to the most senior officer present, just to get that in writing. I would hate to think that anyone else could put pressure on officers to miss the views of parents out of their report.

`I hope parents will ensure at every one of the consultation meetings, which the Council is obliged by law to hold, that a vote is taken towards the end of the meeting and their views are reported formally to councillors making the final decision on the future of their school.`
