| A bad day for Aberdeen says Macdonald |
Scottish Government ministers have today confirmed that Aberdeen Prison is to close- on the same day as Aberdeen City Council Social Work Services were slated by inspectors as being, weak, failing and badly led.
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald said:
`Scottish Ministers have decided to close Aberdeen Prison in favour of a new build in Peterhead. Scotland's third city will now be left without a local prison.
`Even those not yet convicted face an 80 mile round trip to the courtroom, wasting public money on prison vans to and from court.
`The report finds that Social Work Services in the City are at rock bottom suffering from difficulties in budgetary control, in planning and in ensuring that services are targeted to those in most need, the last thing we need is for those in need of help to be moved forty miles away.`
Macdonald added:
`The number of people sent to prison in Scotland is at its highest in a decade. It makes no sense to close Scotland's most over crowded prison. Retaining a remand unit in Aberdeen would at least go some way to filling the gap.` |
