Council's schools policy makes no sense- Macdonald

Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald today accused Aberdeen City Council of closing schools with one hand, while planning to build new ones with the other.

Lewis Macdonald said:

`In the very week that five inner-city schools are due to close, local residents are being asked to comment on plans for new secondary and primary schools in the city.

`The Aberdeen City and Shire Draft Structure Plan says what the two councils think should be done between now and 2030.

`Their plan proposes 36,000 new homes in Aberdeen, half of them by 2016, and says that the city will need `one or two secondary schools [and] associated primary schools` in order to cope.

`How can it make sense to close excellent existing schools like Causewayend, St Machar Primary and Hilton Nursery, while at the same time planning new schools in the city to cope with population growth?

`The Council is closing schools in Tillydrone and the City Centre at the same time as it is planning 5,000 new homes in regeneration areas.

`This is closing schools with one hand, while planning to build new ones with the other. It makes no sense at all.`

Lewis Macdonald is today joining the Friends of Hilton Nursery School for what is likely to be their last end-of-term party and fun day.

He said:

`Parents and grandparents of children at this outstanding and popular school will be completely baffled by Council policy. Not only is their school being closed for no good reason: it will have to be replaced by a new one in no time at all.`
