Macdonald calls on Post Office not to Close Mount Street

Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald today called on the Post Office not to proceed with plans to close its Mount Street branch.

Lewis Macdonald today submitted his response to the public consultation on the possible Post Office closures.

Post Office Limited is currently consulting on its 'Network Change' programme and as part of the Area Plan proposal for the North East it is proposing to close the Mount Street branch on a permanent basis.

Lewis Macdonald said:

`Mount Street Post Office serves a local community with many older people and disabled people, students, and young working people who make extensive use of the branch, for benefits, pensions and other postal services.

`Closure of this branch will be a blow to residents in Rosemount and other areas such as Midstocket and Stockethill, who in the last round of closures lost the Argyll Place Post Office.

`With many customers of the Mount Street Branch reliant on public transport, recent changes to the bus network make the suggested alternatives unrealistic for many.

`Instead of closing the Mount Street Branch, I have called for Post Office Limited to consider how it can work with the operator to bring the premises into compliance with the new requirements that will need to be met in the time ahead.`
