| Macdonald calls for ministers to back model facility |
| Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald has today called for Aberdeen Alcohol Support's Designated Place funding to be secured sooner rather than later.
Albyn House, on Dee Street, is under threat as part of Aberdeen City Council's budget cuts.
Lewis Macdonald said:
`This week has seen the launch of Scotland's second Alcohol Awareness Week, with a number of events planned across Scotland. This includes a briefing by the Scotch Whisky Association in the Scottish Parliament tonight.p>
`This week provides Ministers an opportunity to offer real support to Albyn House. Ministers have already publicly backed schemes such as the Designated Place run at Albyn House.`
The Designated Place is a facility where drunk and incapable people can be taken until they are sober. It supports hard-pressed hospitals and police cells that struggle to cope with the numbers of drunk and incapable people.
Lewis Macdonald added:
`The model is so successful that other areas of Scotland, such as Lothian and the Borders, have expressed an interest in opening a similar facility.
`If the Ministers are serious about tackling Scotland's drinking culture, it is time they back schemes such as Albyn House.`
Motionlodged in the Scotish Parliament:
Date of Lodging: 7 October 2008
3M-02676 Lewis Macdonald (Aberdeen Central) (Lab):
That the Parliament welcomes Scotland’s Alcohol Awareness Week; notes the work done by the alcohol industry, health professionals, the voluntary sector and police forces across the country; further notes the success of initiatives such as the Designated Place at Albyn House in Aberdeen in helping those who are drunk and incapable as well as easing the burden on hard-pressed hospitals and the pressure on police cells, and calls on local and national partners to put in place long-term funding for projects such as Albyn House without further delay.
