| Ministers leave Aberdeen in the lurch, again |
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald today accused Scottish Ministers of failing to act to back the 3Rs schools project in Aberdeen.
Scottish Ministers have today confirmed they are unwilling to underwrite the troubled project, in order to allow construction to be finished on time.
Work on a number of schools in the city, including the replacement for Mile-End and Beechwood schools in Rosemount, came to a sudden halt last week following the collapse of Icelandic bank Landsbanki. Construction of the new Seaton school was halted before it even started.
Lewis Macdonald said:
`Just last week, councillors in Aberdeen agreed an emergency 5 million pound loan which will see four out of nine schools left half built or not even started.
`Additional financial guarantees from Scottish Ministers to the private sector partners building the schools would have ensured that work continued on all nine schools while new backers were sought.`
Lewis Macdonald added:
`In the Scottish Parliament last week, John Swinney claimed the completion of the 3Rs project was up to the private sector builders, even though the project is being funded along the lines of the Scottish Government's proposed Scottish Futures Trust. Yet again Scottish Ministers have left Aberdeen in the lurch. The question now is whether a Scottish Government will wash its hands of any responsibility for future public sector projects funded by the Scottish Futures Trust.`
