| Bring back crem bus, says MSP |
A courtesy bus for pensioners to attend funeral services at Aberdeen Crematorium should be brought back as soon as possible, according to Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald.
The council bus, which picked up passengers getting off the number 14 bus at Woodend to take them the last mile to the Crematorium near Hazlehead, was scrapped by a majority vote earlier this year. The cut is estimated to save the City Council ten thousand pounds a year, out of a total cuts package of twenty five million pounds.
'This was really a penny-pinching cut, 'Lewis Macdonald said today. 'The council saves very little, but for users the bus can be the difference between being able to attend a friend`s funeral or not.
'So today I have written to Kate Dean, the Leader of the Council, to ask her to reverse the decision.
'Many retired people have said to me that they would be quite happy to pay a small charge, rather than lose the service all together. They simply cannot afford to taxis from their homes all the way to the Crematorium, which means most of the time they won`t be able to go.
'It would cost the council very little to restore this service. It would mean a lot to hundreds of older people in Aberdeen.
'I hope on this occasion the Council will be able to reverse this small cut, in order to allow local people to pay their last respects to their friends.'
