| Macdonald hails progress on combined heat and power |
Aberdeen Central MSP and spokesman on Energy, Lewis Macdonald has today secured assurances from Scottish Ministers that regulations on Combined Heat and Power (CHP) schemes will be brought into line with those schemes operating in England and Wales.
The changes could help hundreds of Aberdeen pensioners save money on their heating bills and will mean that CHP schemes serving people`s homes in areas such as Seaton and Stockethill will be freed from the burden of business rates on the pipes carrying hot water into their homes.
Speaking after securing the assurances in today`s debate on the Climate Change (Scotland) Bill, Lewis Macdonald said:
'Aberdeen`s CHP schemes are a model that other cities across Britain would like to adopt. Currently, CHP schemes provide heat and electricity to 850 households in Aberdeen, mostly in sheltered housing blocks in areas like Seaton and Stockethill.
'Ministers have promised to bring Regulations in Scotland into line with those in England and Wales, and to do so before 1 April 2010.
'CHPs serving residential properties will no longer be liable for paying business rates on the distribution pipes in local heating schemes, saving the CHP schemes in Aberdeen up to 40 thousand pounds a year.
'This decision will allow CHP schemes to be further developed and installed across the city and at the same time will help reduce heating bills for hundreds of pensioners in Aberdeen.
'Promoting CHP is a vital part of tackling climate change and making better use of the energy we produce. The assurances given today will reduce the burden of business rates and make CHP a real option for other areas to follow.'
