| Midwife jobs crisis looming says Macdonald |
Aberdeen Central MSP Lewis Macdonald has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Nicola Sturgeon about a looming crisis in finding jobs for newly-qualified midwives in Aberdeen and across Scotland.
A One Year Job Guarantee for Nurses and Midwives currently operates throughout Scotland and offers all graduating nurses and midwives a job in a Scottish Health Board for a year following graduation. However, a student midwife in Aberdeen recently contacted Lewis Macdonald after applying for a job and being informed by every Scottish Health Board that there were no jobs available for her or her classmates.
Lewis Macdonald said:
`My constituent contacted me after it became apparent that there is a real shortage of midwifery posts in Scotland for students due to graduate this year.
`Nicola Sturgeon guaranteed that student midwives trained in Scotland would be offered a job for a year. However, the position now appears to be that my constituent, and many others, will not receive such an offer. As a result many are now considering moving to England, where midwives are still being recruited by the NHS.
`At the same time, many Scottish Health Boards are putting in place a staff freeze which is resulting in additional pressure on maternity services.
`Nicola Sturgeon's One Year Job Guarantee is apparently not worth the paper it is written on. Dozens of skilled and dedicated staff are set to loose out after training at public expense. That is why I have written to Nicola Sturgeon, asking for urgent action to sort this out.`
